How to log a workout and review your next session
Stop guessing what happened last time. Record your completed work, then use it to review your existing plan.
A workout log is a record of what you actually did. After your planned session, write down the exercise, completed sets, reps and load. Before your next session, compare that record with your existing plan.

What should a workout log include?
- Date and session: identify the workout you completed.
- Exercise: use the name or variation you actually performed.
- Set, reps and load: record the completed work and the unit you used.
- Notes: record anything useful to remember, such as an equipment change.
- Next-session review: leave space to check your existing plan before making a change.
Use the same unit when comparing loads. If you change the exercise or equipment, note that change so the next comparison has context.
Download the blank training log
Download the blank workout log CSV. Open it in a spreadsheet or print a copy. Each row is a place to record a completed set; fill only the fields that fit your session.
The file is blank. Keep your own copy wherever you normally store personal records.
How do you review the next workout?
- Find the matching exercise and session in your log.
- Read what you completed and any relevant notes.
- Compare it with your existing training plan and its progression rule.
- Make the next decision using that plan. If the plan or context is unclear, leave the decision open.
A missed day does not create a debt to repay with extra load. If recording the whole session feels like too much, record one completed set and return to your usual system when you can.

What if I missed a workout?
Record the next session you actually complete. A missed day does not need to be repaid with extra load.
