How to choose a fitness guide that fits your week

Before you choose a plan, check what it asks of you—and what you want it to help you do.

A guide can look exciting on a screen and still ask for time or equipment you do not have. Before you choose, write down your goal, the time you can set aside and where you will train. Then compare those answers with what the guide actually includes.

In this article
  1. 1. Name the job you want the guide to do
  2. 2. Check the week you actually have
  3. 3. Match the equipment and instructions
  4. 4. Read the offer before choosing
  5. Start with a free introduction
  6. Make your choice in one minute

1. Name the job you want the guide to do

Start with one useful question: what do you want help deciding? You might want a broad introduction, a structured training routine, or ideas for fitting movement into an existing week. Those are different jobs.

Write your answer in one line. For example: I want an introduction to fitness principles before I choose a routine. That is a starting point, not a promise about the result.

2. Check the week you actually have

Look at the next seven days. Note the days and time you can realistically reserve, plus anything that makes those windows uncertain. Compare that with the guide's stated schedule and session length, if provided.

  • Which days can I make space for?
  • How much time is available on those days?
  • Does the guide describe a schedule, or is it a collection of principles?
  • If my week changes, can I still understand what to do next?

You do not need to turn a general introduction into a rigid schedule. If a guide does not say how long its sessions take, treat that as a question to resolve rather than guessing.

3. Match the equipment and instructions

List the space and equipment you already have access to. Before choosing a routine, check its exercise list, required equipment and any stated alternatives. A guide that does not explain an unfamiliar movement may not answer the question you brought to it.

Optional equipment is a separate choice. You do not need to buy an accessory simply because it appears next to a guide. Check the item's purpose and retailer details before deciding.

4. Read the offer before choosing

  • Format: is it a downloadable guide, a routine or another service?
  • Contents: are the topics and instructions clear enough for your purpose?
  • Terms: is it free or paid, and what is included?
  • Delivery: what does the page say happens after a request or purchase?

If a detail is missing, keep the choice open. A larger bundle is not automatically the better match for the question you are trying to answer.

Start with a free introduction

Make your choice in one minute

  1. Write the question you want the guide to answer.
  2. Note your available days, time and equipment.
  3. Read the contents and terms of one guide.
  4. Choose the next step that fits—or keep looking if important details are missing.

A useful next step is one you can understand and choose for yourself. Start there.

Questions people ask

Do I need to buy equipment before choosing a fitness guide?

No. First check what you already have and what the guide actually requires. Equipment offered separately is optional.

What is the difference between an introduction and a routine?

An introduction can explain principles and exercises. A routine sets out a practice to follow. Check the contents of each guide for its actual format and details.
